Martha Macks

Drawing, Painting, Visual / Media

My art is a personally developed visual language through which I communicate observations of nature, memory, thoughts and hope.

About the Artist

Despite being President of Goya Contemporary and Goyagirl Press which I founded in 1994, I have kept a studio practice for 50 years.   I graduated from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA) in 1976, worked as a lithographer for PAFA projects 1976-1978 and graduated with an MFA in Painting and Art History from Washington University in 1980.  In 1977, I studied art history at Tyler School of Art in Rome.

Artist's Statement

I often use paper for its intimate surface.  Much like skin, paper is sensitive to touch and mark-making. There is the perception of life’s fragility in contrast to affirmation of the artist’s hand being strongly present in real time.  No matter how much intense color or illusion of space in my images, there is always a return to the paper’s surface.
