Miller Peter

About the Artist

Peter Miller was born in Monterey, CA and transplanted to grow on the traffic island of Hanover, MD between Routes 100, 295, 175 and 1. He is a recent graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Photography and resides in Baltimore. 

Artist's Statement

When being viewed consciously, photographs exist in a dream like space devoid of time, telling a story without beginning and end. Just as a song you've heard evokes memories with associated feelings you've forgotten, photography evokes a sense of place that exists in seeing. Discarded fragments of modern life are monumental surrounded by living things, there are traces of life and death on their surface that echo an unknown history. Life gyrates with death in subliminal spaces where everything is obliterated and recreated. I reflect upon dreams and memories of childhood to create personal photographs – connecting to the landscape through playful exploration of space established an appreciation of the natural world within me that continues to grow. Practicing mindfulness on walks helps to heighten my awareness towards a way of seeing beneficial to my process. I interact with what I see in my environment with my camera while walking, creating a record to reflect impressions that become symbolic of past experiences. I seek beauty, to become open to seeing empathetically, focusing on surface and quality of light for now.
