Artist Biography – Mitzi Bernard
MitziBernardClosetArt.com
Mitzi Bernard was born in the small rural farm town of Columbia, Kentucky. She currently lives on a small farm in Friendship, Maryland with her husband, two horses, three dogs and four cats.
Mitzi’s art is inspired from her experiences of life as a female growing up in the 70’s and her business experiences founding and leading a successful non-profit.
Mitzi is a self-taught mixed-media artist creating paper collages. She specializes in taking magazine photographs and art renderings of women that society might judge negatively and turning them into works of art that portray women as strong and powerful. Vintage Playboy Magazine cutouts are primarily used.
Mitzi’s art would definitely be considered “outsider” art. It’s not what one would normally think of when talking fine art, but yet that’s exactly the point of finding beauty in places we may have “judged” differently, whether it be with Mitzi’s art or our judgements of others, particularly women.
Each of her works has a unique story of female strength, judgement and power. Each piece contains hundreds/thousands of tiny little paper cutouts strategically glued on to look like a painting from afar. It’s only when you get up close and see the detail that you discover the surprising paper cutouts.
Mitzi has shown her work at Maryland Federation of Art, in addition to restaurants in Annapolis and Baltimore. She is a member of Maryland Federation of Art, South County Art Lab and Muddy Creek Artist Guild. Her work can be found in collections in New York City, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Nashville, Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, Salt Lake City and many locations in and around Annapolis, MD.
