2023 -
I make my pictures using direct observation and photographic references. As I analyze and record information for my pictures
they develop their own inherent logic. ‘A’ goes to ‘B’ and on to
a conclusion which satisfies my progression to a good picture.
Lately I’ve returned to plein-air painting. Where I record shifting light in the landscape and note a changing world.
I recall all my teachers, friend artists and associates who’ve passed on. And I find myself recalling their lessons, words and spirit while working at my artworks daily.

STATEMENT – 2014 I conceive in my pictures a synchronous bottom of a slot. The bottom may function like a mirroring body of water, a reflecting surface, and as a musically sounding string. The other side of the slot is the sky; open sky without limits or controls. As another string its vibrations set a time of day. Building-like structures and forms make crystalline sides to this slot. They often reflect faceted color and flash with mood. Light funneling down the box-like slot informs these moods with temperatures. At-home citizens, street fixtures, and objects add not only nostalgic notes. But these bumper-like elements appear as blurs or as massive points; monuments to themselves, or. function like furniture in a house. The atmosphere of time moves through this open-ended box like a free streaming fluid. In this flow individuals may glimpse their times, circumstances, others, and chances. And in these unspecific places and impressions lie the cherished or casually forgotten moments to which I presently direct my process. Additional: A picture is developed according to its own inherent logic. In the process of making the picture, each step proceeds in a progression of ‘A’ thus ‘B’ then ‘C’. Although this ‘game of moves’ is often tickled or diverted in an organic manner. Lately there often appears the memento mori – as a sum total of tone. This element of my pictures now is a reminder to myself of death. I am mindful that my father’s last pictures included: A black ‘hole’ seen through a gatehouse & a black void deep in the wall of a mill.Featured Work
