About the Artist

  N N Dwyer is best known for being a prolific creator of works in multiple mediums. Born in Kentucky, she has lived most of her life in Frederick, Maryland. Drawn to art at an early age she participated in children and youth museum classes, artist in residences and a gifted and talented magnet high school. After graduating from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, she focused on fiber arts for many years. Artist's Statement

My current body of work consists of free-form and wall-based sculptural collages. The physical substrates of my work are culled from the detritus of American domesticity. Materials such as worn shoes, grocery packaging, dismantled electronics, children’s toys, textile scraps, and outdated paper media. Each item is intimately manipulated, decorated, de-constructed and re-assembled. Construction methods include gluing, drilling, stapling as well as decorative and structural stitchery. Painting and thread work form lyrical overlays which echo and responds to the visual base. The resulting pieces’ expressive shapes reference natural elements, cultural icons or spiritual concepts. Their internally spacious structures invite viewers to visually explore intricate, layered networks reminiscent of constrained nebulas, neural pathways, city sprawl and river channels. Through my work I playfully explore the inherent human compulsion to build, create, meld and manipulate while encouraging viewers to resist making casual uni-dimensional conclusions regarding first-world environmentalism, middle-class hoarding, global valuation of women’s labor and the dissolution of familial intimacy in the digital age.
