About the Artist
In my youth I was greatly influenced by my paternal grandmother. She had given me a Lancers wine bottle that she had painted a landscape on and turned it into a lamp. Grandma also painted ceramics, saw my interest and gave me a book to teach me how to draw birds. My mother and father were very supportive and helped get me started in a hobby ceramic class. I graduated High School, joined the Navy, married my childhood sweetheart John, we had 3 boys, and traveled during his 21 years in the Navy. In 2000 we returned home, and I started doing ceramics again. In 2005 we found Smith Island and moved down. My husband bought me my own kiln and encouraged me to take this time to concentrate on my ceramics. In May of 2016 I took a photography workshop with Jay P. Fleming on Smith Island. I learned a lot about photography, and the pictures I took have influenced my work. Moving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland gave me the opportunity to start the Smith Island Art Festival, and to meet so many wonderful people on Smith Island, in Crisfield, and from all around Maryland. The staffs of Smith Island Cultural Center, Crisfield Arts and Entertainment District, Somerset County Arts Council, and Maryland State Arts Council have all been very supportive and helpful, encouraging, and supportive. I have been very lucky to have had so many supportive people throughout my life, I'm very thankful for them all past, present, and future.Featured Work
