PAUL DANIEL

About the Artist

PAUL DANIEL, an artist noted for his kinetic outdoor sculpture, has received several major commissions in the region. His work has been exhibited in numerous venues including American University Museum, Katzen Art Center, Washington D.C., C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore, MD, Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences in NY, and the International Sculpture Center in Washington, DC. He has received many awards for his sculpture, among them a Municipal Art Society Grant, MD State Arts Council Individual Artists Grant, the Henry Walters Traveling Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant. Mr. Daniel received his BFA at Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from Rinehart School of Sculpture, MICA.

Artist's Statement

Artist Statement: Kinetic work has been a source of inspiration and pleasure during my career. My sculptures address nature (wind, light and movement). Works in municipal and private collections are sited in urban settings such as median strips or in rural landscapes. Many previous works engage viewers, both pedestrians and auto passengers alike. Wind driven sculpture not only identifies a location but also connects people to weather changes and the active environment. One of the images in the registry, Sun Tattler, a sculpture incorporating mirrors, demonstrates my interest to have the piece go beyond itself reflecting sunlight onto the environment, giving the sculpture an expanded life. Reflected sunlight moves and marks a progression of the day on the surroundings. Another sculpture image, Flirting with Memory, a brightly colored asymmetrical sculpture that moves with the slightest wind in a unique unexpected dance engages the viewer and piques curiosity. Experimenting with different forms as well as the effect of wind and light upon them is an intriguing phenomenon and has been an ongoing exploration in my work.
