About the Artist

Lydia Peters is an artist local to the DC Metro area, originally from Trinidad and Tobago. Lydia came to the US to perfect her craft by studying Art at Howard University obtaining her BFA. During her studies, Lydia became inspired by the AfriCOBRA and Cubism movements. Elements of each can be found in many of her works. Lydia is an American of Afro-Caribbean descent and aims to incorporate her culture and life experience into her artworks. When not creating new works, Lydia works to keep art alive through the next generation by teaching art at elementary schools in her community.

Artist's Statement

Lydia Peters is an artist local the DC Metro area, originally from Trinidad and Tobago. Lydia came to the US to perfect her craft by studying Art at Howard University obtaining her BFA. During her studies, Lydia became inspired by the AfriCOBRA and Cubism movements. Elements of each can be found in many of her works. Lydia is American of Afro-Caribbean descent and aims to incorporate her culture and life experience into her artworks.

"This vibrant painting captures the essence of the Pierrot Grenade, a beloved figure in Trinidadian folklore. The riot of colors in the costume represents the lively and satirical nature of this character, who uses wit and wordplay to entertain and provoke. The geometric shapes and bold lines add a modern twist to this traditional portrayal, while the faceless figure hints at the anonymity behind the mask."
Past culture of Trinidad & Tobago
"La Diablesse / Lajabless is a character in Caribbean folklore. It’s a human woman usually having an attractive body and clothing but a hideous face which she keeps hidden. She has one human foot and one cow hoof. She lures males into the forest so that they get lost and can never find their way back so they end up dying either by getting eaten by a wild animal or by some other gruesome means."
This piece is about mental health and suicidal deaths. This is one on my signature pieces.
"Rebirth" is a vibrant and evocative portrayal of personal transformation and spiritual awakening. The central figure, rendered in tranquil blues, reaches out with a hand that holds a metaphorical crystal ball, from which butterflies emerge, symbolizing the beauty and freedom of evolution. The intricate patterns and contrasting colors create a sense of depth and energy, reflecting the complexities of the inner journey. The bright hues evoke the life-giving force of the sun, infusing the artwork with a sense of optimism and renewal. "Rebirth" invites us to embrace change, to shed old layers, and to emerge into a brighter, more authentic version of ourselves. Poem:
