About the Artist
Ricky Sears creates paintings, drawings, and site-specific installations that are objective, abstract, or inspired by architecture. His plein-air oil paintings carefully observe and record perceived locations, his mindful watercolors use a proprietary method of linking the movement of the brush to create unique breathing patterns, and his sculptural work uses reclaimed materials to reference our build environment. A native of Chevy Chase and Kensington resident, Ricky Sears earned an Emerging Artist Fellowship at Socrates Sculture Park in 2007, grants from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Puffin Foundation, and he has exhibited in New York and Los Angeles. He earned his MFA in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Art in New York in 2006, and his BA in Studio Art with cum laude honors at the University of Maryland College Park. Ricky Sears is currently a teaching artist at Landon School in Bethesda, and maintains a studio on Antique Row in Kensington.

Artist's Statement
My process-based paintings range from plein air oil paintings of observed conditions, to mindful watercolors using a proprietary method to paint breathing patterns. Simone Weil's quote, "attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity," resonates with me, and my paintings invite the viewer to focus on experiencing moments: the seascape's changing light, the expansion and contraction of each breath. To this end, paying attention to how these artworks are perceived is a gift worth giving ourselves.
