Rico McClean

Drawing, Painting, Visual / Media

I'm a contemporary visual artist who loves mixing cultural nostalgic expressions with the profound emotions of people. I am inspired by life, cartoons, and the messages from lyrical content found in music. Periodically, I'll capture cultural aspects from the 90s era, from hairstyles to wardrobe. When drawing, I'm spontaneous, I love the freedom of improvising. I select what medium to use by mood. When people view my art, I want them to feel as if they're time traveling with their eyes while standing in the present.

About the Artist

Maryland artist, Rico McClean is a contemporary visual artist who works with all types of mediums. Throughout McClean's life, he has always had an interest in art. His older brother, who was an artist himself, introduced him to drawing at the age of 5. McClean attended and graduated from Anne Arundel Community College with an associate degree in Business Management. While attending, McClean took a couple art courses. His experience in the classes intrigued him to learn more about art. McClean's professor spotted his potential when he won the "Student Art Collection Purchase Prize" in 2015. Originally, in a Hip Hop duo with his other brother, McClean always found time to create, whether it was producing music, designing album covers, or just for his own personal enjoyment. As the years went by, McClean started to study and be influenced by painters such as George Condo, Picassco, Willem De Kooning, and Kerry James Marshall. He grew an interest in painting because he wanted to expand his creativity by using color. With his older brother being the source of his inspiration, McClean continues to express himself through his music and art. McClean has been a self-taught painter for two years now, hoping to make a name for himself in the art world. Currently, McClean is working on illustrating his 2nd children's book.
