About the Artist
Femininity and feminine performance is a double-edged sword, simultaneously beautiful and violent. Through art, I strives to create meditative and cathartic moments that honor sacred contradictions within the aesthetic and socio-political category of 'feminine'.
My name is Riya, and I completed my 'rangapravesh' or graduation from the Sutradhar Institute of Dance and Related Arts in 2019, representing completion of the 5th level of our traditional arts curriculum and lifelong commitment to furthering Indian Classical Dance as an art form. I received my BA in Painting and mixed media installation from Wesleyan University in 2023 and now work as a fine artist and classical dancer.
Through collage, installation, painting, and dance, I bring different artistic traditions into conversation with each other in pursuit of the unapologetically beautiful and complex. I have experience crafting large scale installations, sculptures, murals, set designs, and more, as well as traditional paintings.
