About the Artist
Rowan Elizabeth Blankemeyer (b 2004) is an oil painter, naturalist, and educator whose journey began in the old-growth forests of the Northeast. Born in 2004, she immersed herself in the Pennsylvanian Pinchot landscape, and art-scene of Philadelphia. Drawing directly from her surroundings, up-close encounters and experiences with native species, ecologically center her work within protecting natural spaces. In the same light, she draws from experiences of women within her support system, and infuses works with possibilities of protected forestry and coexisting womanhood, and the ways they narratively intertwine.
Rowan is currently receiving a B.F.A. in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, MD, and a M.A.T. from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Blankemeyer has been the subject of two solo exhibitions, Laurel in Equinox at Gateway Gallery in Baltimore, MD (2025), and Ephemeral & Tangible, outside of Philadelphia, PA (2022). She has been featured in numerous selected group exhibitions, most recently at Holt Art Center, Eclipse Gallery, and the Middendorf Gallery at the Maryland Institute. Blankemeyer has received several prestigious awards, including the F Eichelberger '81 Environmental Design Scholarship (2025), Rowan has also been published in various print media, including Elan and From Pluto Magazine. She currently lives and paints in Oreland, PA, and Baltimore, MD.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Rowan serves as a part of Baltimore County Parks and Recreation, working as a Naturalist and Program Leader at Lake Roland, leading programs synthesizing her artistic and natural interests, teaching plein air and natural dye workshops to patrons of all ages, while also tending to the 500 acre land, previously occupied by the Susquehannock and Piscataway.
