As a multidisciplinary artist, my medium is my message: I create both paper artworks and paintings in order to engage and express distinct ways of knowing and seeing. My paper works are intricately-cut and layered, intentional, self-aware, incisive. In contrast, my paintings are immanent and rooted in feeling, looser and more spontaneous. These distinct approaches function as multiple lenses through which I explore and experience creative unfolding as it reverberates through emotion, perception, and understanding.
My latest work consists of precision-cut, layered paper and inkjet prints. Like tree rings or geological strata, my paper works are artifacts of repetition and change. Integrating distinct, overlapping moments into an aggregated whole, my works describe the process of their own becoming.
My process is driven by impulse and inquiry. Designing digitally, I generate images by layering sequences of contours and transformations, at times layering these over scanned images of acrylic paintings. The images are printed as needed and cut by laser, each discrete, successive stage from a separate sheet of paper. The cut, printed sheets are stacked and assembled into composite structures that call to mind waters, rocks, and other natural forms.
Enacting creative transformation, my work pushes gently into the narrow spaces of our awareness, offering both novel occasions of experience and a glimpse of how these come to be.
About the Artist
Ruth is a multidisciplinary artist known for her layered paper artworks, as well as her abstract and landscape paintings. She first learned paper-cutting as a traditional Jewish folk-craft and established her practice designing ketubahs (Jewish wedding art), creating over 2,000 works for couples worldwide. Her current work combines digital design, laser-cutting, and inkjet-printing to create incisively-layered paper artworks. Ruth lives and works in Montgomery County, Maryland.Featured Work
