Individual Artist

2019

My Time-Lapse films are an exciting part of my creative process. These short but lively videos invite viewers to become a fellow passenger on my artistic journey.
My paintings are filled with people but only hint at architectural detail. This ambiguity of "place" is intentional and suggests that if we step back and take in the whole, we can more easily see beyond differences of language, skin color, or traditions.
Viewers watch my artwork come to life as I plan, sketch, paint, and re-paint. My films give a glimpse into the complicated yet intriguing path of one artist's creative process.

Artist's Statement

My Time-Lapse films are an exciting part of my creative process.  These short but lively videos invite viewers to become fellow passengers on my artistic journey.   These films focus on my canvas paintings which explore the small details of everyday life while amplifying community spirit.         I paint dynamic "bird's-eye view" compositions to entice viewers into the unfolding drama on canvas.  In my "Neighborhood Life Series", I paint kids playing, teens at skateboard parks, commuters biking to work, and people going about their daily life.  I want viewers to recognize themselves in my paintings.  The works often give only a hint of architectural detail.  This ambiguity of "place" is intentional, helping to inspire parallel thinking regarding us a people.  The inexactness suggests that if we step back and take in the whole, we can more easily see beyond differences of language, skin color, or traditions.     Not only is my “bird’s-eye” vantage point unique, but the creation of Time-Lapse films is also rare among artists.  I photograph every step, from sketches through to final canvas.  My films show the progress of my paintings and include the missteps, alterations, and adjustments made to achieve a finished canvas.  It is important to see this un-polished side of creating art.       My films include the stories behind the paintings.  In my "Inspiring People" series, I painted my friend, Geneva, who turned 90 in 2020.  My film quotes her tips for aging well.      View Time-Lapse films here: www.sallyjkdavies.wixsite.com/sallydaviespaintings/time-lapse    or my Youtube channel:  www.youtube.com/channel/UCfQ7FCNKJJzmDrBvwevg3RQ      Trained as an illustrator, my award-winning paintings have been exhibited in galleries since 1996.  All my paintings endeavor to create scenes for viewers to discover a sense of place and find a genuine esprit de corps.  I create art filled with light that reverberates with humanity and compassion.
