SANDRA STREET

About the Artist

Sandra Y. Street is a lifelong resident of Baltimore, Md. She’s a retired federal employee, who has been married over 30 years and has two grown children and three granddaughters. Sandra has always had a love of colors, shapes and textures. Her childhood report cards note her interest in art at a very young age. She was taught to sew by her mother and made dolls for many of her neighborhood friends when she was a little girl. Sandra saves/ collects and recycles almost everything! Friends are always offering her items to use in her doll designs. Sandra adorns her dolls with beads, trims, unusual fabrics and other trinkets from her many bags, boxes and baskets of “treasures” that she has acquired over the years. Sandra’s dolls are tall and slim with long necks and slender waists. “I think of them as fashion models minus the egos and attitudes, she enjoys dressing them in lavishly detailed costumes, no two dolls are ever alike. Sandra describes her dolls as “three dimensional silhouettes", the personalities of the dolls shine through without traditional facial features. Sandra’s dolls have been offered in the gift shops of Washington DC's Smithsonian Museum, Kennedy Center, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The American Museum of Visionary Art and upscale boutiques across the country. Sandra has participated in many art and craft venture in the Baltimore area. She also offers her dolls online, which has allowed her dolls to be displayed in the homes of doll collectors living abroad. A few of Sandra’s dolls reside in the homes of several celebrity doll collectors, which include former California Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Currently, a doll designed by Sandra in the likeness of black astronomer Benjamin Banneker is on display at the Benjamin Banneker Museum in Catonsville, Md. Sandra has lost count of how many dolls she has designed, but knows that it has been hundreds. Sandra looks forward to passing her doll-making skills on to her three precious granddaughters.
