Painting, Visual / Media

During 2022, I completed two series of paintings. At first I did not see the connection as they appear to be quite dissimilar. I realized that they are two sides of the same issue.
The ‘Challenges’ series represents the negative forces that are affecting us in this country. The paintings include my expression in paint of current challenges including the pandemic, climate change and political uncertainty. There is an element of hope in this series; we are managing to hang on although by a fraying thread.
The second series includes views of National Parks. I view the National Parks as our nation’s treasure and a physical example of what we can do in a positive way to connect us to each other and to our nation. The dual role of protecting wild places while allowing visitors to access those places is part of the mission of the National Parks. In the midst of climate change, our ability to both protect and use natural resources is necessary for our survival.

About the Artist

I paint in watercolor and acrylic on paper and wood panels. I love watercolor because it combines luminosity with soft edges and unpredictable results. Painting in acrylic introduced me to many layers, textural effects and collage elements. I find the space between representational and purely abstract images most compelling. My subject matter varies based on what I find intriguing and challenging but includes many landscape settings.
