Individual Artist

It is my desire to find a way of being in this world that illuminates others. Because illumination is a concept that can reveal itself in many ways, I focus my investigation by painting people or my surroundings when they’re lit by natural light. There are moments when light seems to take hold of whoever or whatever it touches, moments when it appears to grip, stroke or charge anything in its path. The resulting interplay of light and shadow can ignite the most ordinary setting, revealing its inherent beauty. This effect of the light, rather than its source, is what I’m interested in exploring.

About the Artist

It can be said that Sharon Wolpoff, who began her art training at age five, has always been an artist. She completed her formal education at American University (B.A., M.F.A. and J.D.), with additional coursework in Italy and Mexico. Counted amongst her honors are three Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards, an Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County Fellowship and a Kreeger Purchase Prize. Throughout her career Wolpoff’s work has been exhibited extensively, most recently in solo shows at the University of Maryland’s Global Campus Gallery, the American University Museum in Washington, DC., and Georgetown University's Lombardi Cancer Clinic. On a lighthearted note, one of her paintings was in use on the set of the NBC series “Mad About You”. A Washington, DC native, her studio is located in Kensington, MD. To learn more, please visit her website.
