Sheryl Southwick

Trees, memory and myth figure strongly in my work. Since 2012 I have explored the beauty of layers of printed and distressed papers in collage making to create tactile colorful works which sometimes involve paint and discarded prints. I make paintings, collages and lithographic and relief prints, sometimes mixing all the mediums in collage form.

About the Artist

A Brief Bio of Sheryl Southwick Sheryl, a resident of Easton, is a colorist having studied with professors who had been students of Josef Albers, including Harvey Harris and Paul Dufour.  After attaining a BFA in painting, Milton Resnick, Nathan Oliveira and Leon Berkowicz were also teachers who influenced her work.  Chris Mona, Printmaker; Mary Vernon, Janine Nagy, and David Hornung at Mississippi Art Colony; and Laurel True at True Mosaic Studio in New Orleans are among her other teachers.  Her current work is both tactile and reflective of color practice, creating harmonious titillating surfaces that evoke rivers and landscapes in rain or sunshine. Besides showing in various pop up exhibitions, she is represented by The Zebra Gallery in Easton, MD.  She is also a Teaching Artist for  classes to children, teens and adults throughout the year at the Academy Art Museum, Talbot County Free Library, and Heartfields Assisted Living.  She has managed group murals and mosaics. As a teaching artist she loves to introduce people new to art-making in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking and book arts.

Artist's Statement

My Art, My Life -- Surfaces that shimmer with torn colored paper, paint strokes or glass, paintings, collages, shiny mosaics, new wholes made from bits. Rework myself, learn new ways of being, break up assumptions, lose attitudes. Find new strengths, new beauty, harmony.  A constant healing garden of discovery.

Torn Hand-colored paper to represent a cherry blossom tree on a path
The sunset was so amazing one day when I was driving home that I had to pull over and take a photo. I interpreted the photo with this collage of hand torn colored paper.
Autumn inspired a small oil painting which I used to make this interpretation of the richly lit fields, using paper that I color. The strokes of paint become bits of paper.
An Oil Painting depicting trees in a landscape dominated by bright geometric shapes in the style reminiscent of Hundertwasser. Oranges and Blues dominate this large painting.
This collage of painted torn paper with a little stenciling gives the feeling of the light gentle rains that fall in spring when the trees are just leafing out with that particular green. The verticality of the strips is what gives it a feeling of falling drops.
This colorful Collage of torn painted paper is a depiction of trees along a riverbank. On the other side of the river is a yellow field. The lower part of the picture is populated by smaller torn shapes that can allude to figures or other shapes that are abstracted and indefinite, leaving it up to the viewer's imagination. Yellow and Blue dominate in this very tactile piece. It is a view through dark silhouetted trees.
