I grew up in an atmosphere where design had a significant importance. The tools of that trade have been familiar and a fascination since childhood. The compass, French curve, protractor, triangle and sources of measurement all fit. When I was introduced to Euclid I immediately saw the simplicity and beauty in his propositions and envisioned them as drypoint etchings. I like to play with the fixed, logical and absolute and to jar it bringing a new perspective to the viewer. "Euclid, fl. 300B.C., was a Greek mathematician, often referred to as the "Father of Geometry". His Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for etching mathematics, especially geometry. In the Elements, Euclid deduced the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory and rigor." The drypoint etchings are in an edition of 10, printed on Arches.Education: Maryland Institute College of Art, BFA, Painting Pratt Institute, MFA, Printmaking Residencies: Vermont Studio Center, fellowship, 1989, 1990, 1998, 2005 Collections: Collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Banner for anti-Nuclear Movement, 1979 Maryland Artist Collection, UMUC, Adelphi, MD 1982 Awards: Anne Arundel County Juried Exhibit, Mitchell Gallery, St. John’s College, 2006, Jurors Award 25th Anniversary Exhibit, Chaney Gallery, MD Hall for the Creative Arts, 2004, Jurors Award Maryland Biennial Exhibition, Baltimore Museum of Art, Trustee’s Award, 1980 Selected Exhibitions: Between Stops, Circle Gallery, four-person exhibit, 2012 Image and Imagination, AA County Juried Exhibit, Mitchell Gallery, St.John’s College 2010, 2012 Natural Wonders, BWI Airport, 2011 Small Wonders, Circle Gallery, Juried Exhibit, 2011 Art of the Book, Mitchell Gallery, Invitational Exhibit, 2010 Art Between The Creeks, Eastport Warehouse, Annapolis, MD, 2004-12 Gatherings, Carla Massoni Gallery, Chestertown, MD, summer group show, 2006-07 Cafe Gallery, Old Chatham, NY, Solo Exhibit, 2005 Montage Gallery, Baltimore, MD, summer group exhibit, 2005-07 25th Anniversary Juried Invitational, Chaney Gallery, MD Hall for the Creative Arts, 2004 Small Works, Nutt Room, St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD, solo show, 2004 Townies, 49 West, Annapolis, MD, 2003 DeMatteis Gallery, Annapolis, MD, solo show, 1987, 1988, 2002 West Annapolis Gallery, Annapolis, MD, solo show, 1995 University of Maryland, “Three Exhibitions, Three Locations, Five Artists”, 1995 Ruby Blakeney Gallery, Annapolis, MD, solo show, 1994 Loyola College Gallery, Baltimore, MD, 1993 Conrad’s, Severna Park, MD, solo show, 1991 8 x 10 Club, Baltimore, MD, solo show, 1990 Cardinal Gallery, MD Hall for the Creative Arts, Annapolis, MD, solo show, 1988 Worth Gallery, Washington, DC, 1984, 1987, 1988 Gallery 10 Ltd., Washington, DC, solo show, 1979 MD State Arts Council Fellowship, Sixteen Maryland Artists, Five MD locations, 1978 Professional Experience: Director of Exhibits and the Visual Arts, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 2008-present Curator, Beverley Robinson Collection, USNA Museum, 1982 to 2008 Exhibits Preparator, The Mitchell Gallery, St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD 1994 to present Curator, Landscape & Nature, A View From Maryland, Maryland Sister States Program, 2007 Concerning the Euclid Etchings Drafting is in my background. I draw my inspiration from numerous sources, the landscape, the sea, looking at art and people and also from the use of color and form in risky combinations.Featured Work
