My work tells not only my story but many black women. I hope to translate our perspective for the masses, while helping those who identify find comfort, validation, solace and visibility in my art. I hope my work encourages viewers to stop and think, to consider and appreciate that which they find beautiful, and perhaps which they do not.

About the Artist

Washington, DC born artist, Simone Agoussoye, has been honing her skills in portrait artistry for the past several years. Known for her creative depictions of people, Simone blends her traditional skill in portraiture with fresh, unique, and unconventional techniques transforming her from a realistic fine artist to more of a contemporary artist.   From a young age, Simone was creating and painting something, mainly portraits. Her parents were very supportive when it came to Simone's artistic expressions. Her grandmother also had a major influence on her interest in art. At the age of 7, Simone knew that when she grew up, she wanted to be an artist, and ever since then made conscious choices to lead her to that dream. Throughout her journey, her work has been inspired by artists like Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and more.   Simone’s evolution in portrait artistry has allowed her to explore using materials such as crushed glass in her work. The use of this material has sharpened her craftsmanship, proving that she has a unique talent. She is highly creative with an insatiable thirst for growth and development in her artistic skill.

Beauty Mark speaks to the identity and the presence of young black girls living during one of the most difficult and challenging times in their life and in history. A Global Pandemic. Covid. Social Distancing. Being a Woman in America. Being a Black Woman in America. Black Lives Matter. All of these combined social elements often leaves one wondering what the future holds. Similar to the beauty mark found on this young black girl's face, it stands alone but still makes a powerful impact. Just like this one black little girl in this dark seemingly scary world she can still and will have a powerful impact. Despite all of these disturbing circumstances and all of the ugliness we have seen in 2020 until now, beauty still exists even if it is as small as this Beauty Mark.
The Essence of the Black Woman is the energy that exudes from her being of simply just being. Therefore the essence of a black woman is not one constant perpetual thing but rather it is the combination of many things. It is transferable and transcends the everyday norm while transitioning itself in various forms throughout one's lifetime. The essence of a black woman is their unique strength. Her strength to love, fight, protect, procreate, and more. However the strength of a black woman can most often lead to the demise of the black woman because of the blatant disregard of all the equally important elements that make up a black woman. Although she is strong she can still be broken and although she can be broken she still is strong. She still is a woman. The essence of a black woman is the fact that she is a woman. Every woman is different but the same and that is the essence of a black woman.
There is no excuse, only choices to be made. UCME is giving each and every viewer the opportunity to make a choice. The choice to simply ignore what is right in front of their eyes or the opportunity to gain insight on the beauty and the light this piece holds even in its darkness.
