About the Artist
Sophie Cannon is an artist from Golden Colorado based in Baltimore. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Maryland Institute Collage of Art with a BFA in photography and a minor in art history. Through her practice, Cannon uses multimedia techniques that rely on experimentation, intuition, and questioning the nature of photography and the act of looking. With her work and approach, Cannon ties her art with her personal experiences in the world, addressing questions about the nature of existence and reality.Featured Work

Caving In to Disturbed Beauty
photography, collage, video
2022
Cannon’s works capture her emotional and physical experience while making the work during both a pandemic and the death of her father. The original images were created as a cathartic exercise and a hope that artmaking would save her from the sense of being trapped. The current installation with printed large-scale photographs and video highlights our own intrusion into Cannon’s intimate dreamscape, an innermost nightmare being contained and viewed.
Excavation is an accompanying stop motion video, made with multiple materials and photoshop layers to create an entranceway into the spaces the photographs inhabit. These photographs question the reality of experiences, both personal and public. An extensive commentary on our deep psychological and cultural connection to voyeurism, Caving In to Disturbed Beauty presents a space of both horror and fascination where we are meant to question our role in viewing intimate and emotional spaces.
