About the Artist

Staci and Bill McLauchlan’s work is a collaborative process that involves the digital transformation of their original fabric compositions into 2D wall art. Every piece they create begins with their original design of cut, pieced and sewn cotton batik fabrics. The assembled fabric composition is scanned and the image is transformed and enhanced using digital technology. The finished work is printed on aluminum using archival pigments. Staci was raised in a house surrounded by fabric. Her mother was a home economics teacher who tried everything to get her interested in sewing. Of course, being the independent, freewheeling teenager she was, Staci would have none of it. It wasn’t until she was out on her own that Staci realized that in spite of her efforts to ignore the wisdom her Mom tried to impart, some of it actually took. Staci came to love fabric and the art of fabric composition. Staci says, “I work exclusively with batiks. The richness and variation of the colors makes it possible to ‘paint’ with fabric in a way that permits the whimsical as well as the formal.” Whether it’s contemporary curve and line compositions, tropical island scenery, or abstract textile designs, Staci has a vision that fabric art should always be alive and always inspire the viewer to wonder: “Is it really fabric?” Bill has been doing digital art work since the personal computer was invented. He started with an Apple II in 1980. (He regrets that he didn’t buy Apple stock at the same time!) Bill loves to explore the richness of batik fabrics from the perspective of digital transformation. Staci says of Bill’s work, “Sometimes the digital renderings are quite true to the fabric composition; other times I don’t recognize the piece!” Exhibiting as McLauchlan Digital Art, Staci and Bill have been selected to participate in many juried fine art shows from Key West to Cape Cod to Peoria and the Midwest.  Their work has been awarded blue ribbons at multiple shows.  Staci and Bill are members of the Frederick Arts Council, in Frederick, MD where they currently reside.
