Public Art, Sculpture / Installation, Visual / Media

I discovered glass making about two decades ago, and felt like I had grown wings. I could transform my transparent watercolor paintings into three dimensions! When I was awarded my first commission for a permanent art installation, the possibilities of creating three dimensional glass to fill a space and dance in changing light was absolutely thrilling. Why would I ever do anything else?

About the Artist

I am an architect turned artist. I make glass art that becomes integral with their places. With unique optics, the art is visible from numerous locations within a building with an inviting presence from the exterior.

Artist's Statement

I trained and practiced as an architect, and am experienced in working with community groups, agencies, and review processes, collaborating with engineers, and with managing a range of budgets. I personally design, shape and fire each piece of glass for every installation. Working with molten glass, I create elements that can last for millennia. Glass interacts with light and walls, ceilings, and floors are transformed with dynamic reflections, refractions, and shadows, demonstrating the physics of optics. Vivid markings on Blue Morpho butterflies and the iridescent sheen on hummingbirds are examples of thin film interference. This ephemeral wonder is recreated with brilliant permanence when I sculpt glass and grow microscopically thin coatings of metal oxide quartz crystals directly on the surfaces. Humans have been making glass for thousands of years! Glass demonstrates the ingenuity of human invention. Colors change when viewed from different angles and lighting conditions. Glass requires the most minimal maintenance, a periodic dusting, and will last for the life of a building.
