Sunhee Jung

About the Artist

Artist Sunhee Kim Jung is a Korean-born American Artist. Sunhee Kim Jung is known as a painter of lush landscapes that express provocative ideas, beliefs, and feelings about life and death, loss and rebirth. Jung has been selected by the US Department of State’s Art in Embassy Program for the third time. Four of her paintings will be shown at the American Embassy in Rangoon, Burma in 2016-2018. She attended to take part in a four person exhibition at Artbox Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland in October 2018. She had her 10th solo exhibition at Annapolis City Hall gallery on April-May, 2018. Jung’s paintings were selected into numerous juried shows internationally, nationally and regionally. The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, Texas in 2017, Queens Museum of Art Partnership Gallery New York in 2016, The US Embassy in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 2010-2012, US Embassy in Rangoon, Burma in 2006-2008 in the US Department of State’s Art in Embassy Program. The Costa Rica National Art Museum in San Jose, Costa Rica in 2011. The Eduard Vilde Museum, Tallin, Estonia, Florence Biennale (7th) in Italy, DANYA International Art Fair in Gimje, Korea in 2009. Alexandria Museum of Fine Art, Louisiana in 2007, Katzan Art Center in Washington DC in 2007. Jung also organized the Korean International Exchange Art Show at the Anne Arundel Community College and was recognized as a Best Contributor and International Contributor from Korea Art International Exchange Association for bringing 20 Anne Arundel Community College’s Faculty’s work to the Korea Art International Exhibition in Seoul, Korea. Jung earned BFA in painting from Corcoran College of Art & Design and her MFA in painting from American University.  She is the Vice President of the “US-Korea Arts Foundation” in Washington D.C. which is the one of the greatest organization to introduce Korean culture and arts to America by working with the community, government, museums and international organizations. Jung was the President of the Korean American Artists Association – Washington Metropolitan Region from 2004 to 2006.  Jung is teaching Art courses at the Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD from 2007 to current.  Currently Jung is a directory member on the Han Mee Artists Association in Greater Washington area. Jung joined the Board of directors at the Anne Arundel County Arts Council for a three year term. Jung is a member of Washington Project for the Arts, Washington DC and a member of Maryland Federation of Art, in Annapolis, MD Her paintings have been featured WNAV radio, The Capital, The Gazette, The Tower Light, The Carroll County Times, Maryland Gazette, What’s up, Washington Woman Magazine, WKTV etc. After her residency at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, which helped her to further develop her work, she had finished her second residency program at Tong Lau Space in Hong Kong, summer 2018. She finished the Cuttyhunk Island artist residency workshop with Suzanne Brooker in June of 2019. She had received AHL: Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Grant 2019. Currently she is preparing the Mural Project in Thailand for non- profit organization that houses rescued trafficked children in fall 2021. Her vision is to always strive to expand her work in the limitless territory of art.

Artist's Statement

Artist Statement for New Homeland series, Colors and forms of nature hold the power to heal the hurt. I have a positive perspective on life and my art is influenced and inspired at each moment by passion and emotional sense. Those conflicts became one of characteristics of As I journeyed through the north, the changing texture of the landscape and the changing colors soothed my soul. This piece represents my memories and evoked emotions throughout the painting. You can see the changing character of Jack the mouse as he strolls through life. After the completion of 27 feet long silk drawing, Jack became the star of my new series with oil on canvas. Jack, little mouse is the mouse represent small life in a big world. It’s about surviving, thriving, and living large.
