Susanne is a filmmaker whose current projects focus on telling women's stories, raising public understanding of environmental challenges, and communicating science through Wyld Earth Films, the production company she co-founded with Emily Wathen.
About the Artist
Susanne Coates is a multimedia specialist who is highly skilled in media production, software development, and biological science (BS in biology, Ph.D. Neuroscience). Dr. Coates is currently the Senior Web Developer for the University of Maryland's, College of Arts and Humanities where she creates software for web-based, multimedia content management systems. Before starting at the University, she worked with numerous clients through her own company to create video, multimedia assets, and software. Today, she collaborates with the National Academy of Sciences to produce short documentaries on various science and environment related topics. Her work has screened at the Walt Disney Studios (Burbank, Ca.), Washington DC's Environmental Film Festival, the Red Rock Film Festival (Utah) and other venues. Changing Tides: Glimmers of Hope on the Bay
For decades, researchers, activists, and policymakers have struggled to make real progress restoring the Chesapeake Bay, one of the country’s largest and most prized estuaries. Agricultural inputs, climate change, relentless development, and a web of special interests continue to present challenges. While there has been some success mitigating nitrogen and phosphorous pollution, ecosystems and species are still decline (See News Feature: The complex case of Chesapeake Bay restoration). But in recent years, a small group of researchers has taken on the painstaking and daunting task of trying to restore two of the Bay’s most important keystone species, oysters and seagrass, bit by bit. Their efforts are starting to pay dividends.
