About the Artist
Suzanne Hill explores creative themes with mixed media like fiber, acrylic, oil, graphite, resin, encaustic, and metal. Birds of prey and nests are major concepts in her work, and her intent is to simultaneously attract and repel. Suzanne holds a B.S. in fine art from Towson University and has also studied metalsmithing. Her work has been exhibited in numerous shows around Maryland, such as the Harvest Party at Galloping Goose Vineyard, the Carroll Artists Guild member show at Carroll Community College, and "Thread" at the Carroll Arts Center. Her abode is the cozy chaos of a working studio in Maryland.

Artist's Statement
From traveling on a motorcycle, I discovered I am most fascinated by the handiwork of people making an impact on their property: rock gardens, restored cars, sculptures, porches, farmyards, vineyards, quilts, rugs. I reminisce about these scenes when I’m back in my studio, and think about how often phrases like “it’s illegal” or “that’s not allowed” or “that’s too tall” exist in our discussions with each other. This compels me to depict imaginary scenes of the upper hand of the State interfering in people’s enjoyment of these private endeavors and to display our vulnerability. My inspiration is the social realism of Ben Shahn, the colors and textures of Jamie Wyeth, and luxurious copious details of Julie Heffernan’s work.
