Taurean Washington’s practice draws a parallel connection between the world of art, and the culture and music of hip-hop. In 2008, has coined this movement “Art-Hop”. Taurean identifies as a “visual rapper”, a term that alludes to his lyrical imagery that have multiple meanings. Taurean refers to his images as “entendres”, a term to parallel the written and performed lyrics that hip hop musicians create with double or triple meanings. As a painter, Taurean produces work that create a dialogue with an array of topics. Subjects such as Religion, race, politics, and pop culture are explored. As far as Taurean’s paintings, he labels them as songs. When all of his paintings are in a series, or a body of work, Taurean refers to them as albums. In each album, there is an accompanying audio music project, interpreting and adding a music component to each painting. As a result, both components of Art and hip-hop are thoroughly explored.
