Using the quote, “Keeping the culture alive and undiluted,” as a motto, I’m deeply committed to being a dedicated cultural ambassador, dynamic educator, and versatile performer.
About the Artist
Uasuf Gueye, of Washington, DC, is a nationally acclaimed musician and artist. He belongs to a family of Nguewel/Diali, or oral historians and musicians. He began his study and performance of Manding and Wolof music at a very young age. Uasuf is a dynamic djembe and dundun drummer as well as a skilled instrument craftsman. He also plays the 21-key Bala, which he learned from master artists of the Manding tradition of West Africa. Uasuf has dedicated his life to the task of becoming an ambassador of African culture to the world. The catalyst for such a responsibility is the passion he has for reconnecting those of the African Diaspora to one another. His repertoire as a recording and performing artist ranges from traditional songs from the 13th century to contemporary original compositions incorporating hip-hop, blues and jazz riffs. Professional work and accomplishments include: • Lead Musician for bands Uasuf Gueye & Urban Virtuosos and the Uasuf Gueye Trio • 2017-2018 Strathmore Artist in Residence • Musician/Performing Artist for Alex Martin Music, Proper SKANKS, Africa Unplugged and others • Guest Artist and Lecturer for American University, Berklee College of Music, and various D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area K-12 schools • Music Accompanist for Kankouran African Dance, Coyaba Dance Theater, and moreArtist's Statement
As a traditionally-trained, multi-instrumentalist in West African music, I am deeply committed to connecting history with the present, striving to represent diverse cultures and shared human experiences authentically and artistically. Through traditional West African instruments such as the Balafon, Djembe, Ngoni, and Tama, I honor my family's legacy while educating my community and helping those in the African Diaspora reconnect with their cultural roots. I create and deliver educational programs for all age groups, from toddlers to the elderly, facilitating workshops primarily in the DC and Maryland area, while also extending my reach nationally and internationally. My work includes staffing and collaborating with various schools and after-school programs in the DC/MD/VA area. I’ve also participated in creative music and art workshops in senior centers.Featured Work
