The Baltimore School for the Arts

BSA strives to be the leading pre-professional arts high school in the country. BSA seeks to prepare the next generation of the creative workforce by providing inspiring arts and academic training to high school students as well as opportunities in the arts to younger children and the greater community. BSA provides talented students from all sectors of the community with a personally supportive and intellectually challenging environment where rigorous training in a specific arts discipline combines with a demanding college-preparatory academic curriculum. Qualified students may audition for one of six arts disciplines: the visual arts, music, theatre, dance, stage design and production, or film and visual storytelling. A further mission of the school is to serve as an arts resource for the Baltimore community by offering performances, educational workshops, and extensive after-school training in the arts to children from city elementary and middle schools.

About this Organization

Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA) is one of the nation's leading public arts high schools. Founded in 1980 and governed by resolutions that make it different from other city schools, the BSA admits students to its high school through highly selective auditions in dance, film, music, stage design and production, theatre, and visual arts. BSA is also the home of the TWIGS (To Work In Gaining Skills) free after-school and Saturday arts instruction program, serving up to 700 2nd-8th grade children from 120 Baltimore elementary and middle schools. The program, for city residents only, offers classes in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts and provides important access to the arts for underserved children. BSA is supported by a non-profit 501c3, the BSA Foundation, which works in conjunction with corporations, foundations, and donors across Baltimore to help fund the high school, TWIGS, and other outreach initiatives. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Overseers, comprised of leading professionals in the community who share a commitment to supporting excellence and creating opportunity in Baltimore.

Services/Opportunities

BSA wants to ensure that all children in Baltimore City have access to the arts. We are proud to serve the community through TWIGS, a free after-school and Saturday arts program that serves up to 700 Baltimore City children in grades 2-8 each year. TWIGS offers free classes in dance, vocal and instrumental music, stage production and design, visual arts, and visual storytelling. TWIGS also serves as a pipeline for admission to the high school; each year roughly 50 percent of the incoming first-year class have been trained through the TWIGS program.
