The Choptank Tolomato Legacy Project’s mission is to teach cultural literacy through the arts, working with underserved populations and children with learning differences through hands-on art experiences.
About this Organization
About Us The Choptank Tolomato Legacy Project is a non-profit arts education organization dedicated to teaching disadvantaged and at-risk members of the Eastern Shore community cultural literacy through approachable public arts projects. We specialize in offering public arts education programs in remote rural communities. We have years of experience instructing children with learning differences and adults and teens with mental health issues. We find the best way to teach the arts is to find that spark of interest we each possess. Over the years we have found that positive outcomes grow out of visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learning experiences. We believe that there are many ways to learn. We know that hands-on learning and risk-taking is an effective way to gain confidence in one’s own abilities. We know that self-confidence leads to success, and we firmly believe that use makes master.Services/Opportunities
The Co-op Mural Program is a STREAM based arts education curriculum which provides visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learning experiences to students at public and nonprofit Maryland schools as they create large scale works of art. We have decades of experience working with adults and children with learning differences and focus on 1:1 instruction.
In the Co-op Mural Program each artwork is designed and created by the participants. The murals are typically based on local social and environmental concerns and are painted on 4' x 12' wood panels at table top height making the activity accessible to all. It takes 10 three hour workshops to complete each project. The finished murals are installed in the local community.
This program is booked through FY24
The Kent Narrows Shantytowns consisted of 200 rudimentary dwellings which existed along the Kent Narrows from 1930 through 1990. The community housed about 1000 African Americans who worked at one of 18 seafood packing houses lining the waterway. This once vibrant settlement is long gone from local memory and few images exist of the area during its prominence. In December 2022 we began the research necessary to recreate the shantytowns as a large mural. Working from old postcards, the few existing photos and oral history we are slowly putting together the puzzle pieces of the shanty community with the help of members of a local behavioral health organization.
Over the next 18 months we will be working with the community at senior centers, community halls, street fairs and schools to recreate the forgotten Kent Narrows Shantytown community in the form of a 6' x 32' mural that will be installed under the route 50 / 301 bridge over the Kent Narrows.
This program is booked through FY24.
The Rural Mural Program provides arts education experiences in remote communities on the Eastern Shore. The murals, which focus on local environmental and social concerns, are created on lightweight panels by community participants in rural areas of Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline Counties.
Most public arts projects take place in larger towns. Our Rural Mural Program transports arts education projects to remote communities of the Eastern Shore where the lack the transportation makes participation in arts activities problematic. Our program focuses on creating murals where rural residents live. The finished artwork is installed in the community where it was created.
The 4' x 16' rural murals are created on wood panels at table top height making the activity accessible to all. It takes 10 three hour sessions to complete each mural. We provide all the materials required for the activity including paints, brushes, tables, tents, and smocks.
We have a community site selected in Kent County for FY24. We are currently in search of mural sites in Caroline and Queen Anne's County for FY24.
This project is free to participating communities. Please contact us for more details.
