Empressa Ensemble

About this Organization

Empressa Ensemble (formerly Élan Ensemble) is a Maryland-based 501(c)(3) chamber ensemble dedicated to historically informed performance of music from the 17th through 19th centuries. Founded in 2015 and based in College Park, Empressa performs regularly throughout the Washington–Baltimore–Annapolis region, presenting intimate, immersive concerts that bring early music vividly into the present. Specializing in site-responsive performances in historic houses, museums, and cultural landmarks, Empressa creates programs that activate the spaces and stories in which this music was originally heard. The ensemble’s work often incorporates original editions, period performance practices, and historically grounded ornamentation and gesture, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience this repertoire with both scholarly depth and emotional immediacy. Empressa’s performances frequently include re-enactments, interpretive narration, and collaborations with curators, historians, and literary scholars, transforming concerts into rich, interdisciplinary encounters with history. At the heart of Empressa’s mission is a commitment to storytelling and accessibility. Each program is shaped by extensive research and presented through engaging, informal concert-lectures that connect music to the art, literature, politics, and social life of its time. These performances invite audiences of all backgrounds—both seasoned early-music listeners and newcomers—to enter the cultural world behind the sound. In addition to its core concert offerings, Empressa collaborates closely with cultural institutions, historic sites, and the National Park Service to develop bespoke musical programs that complement exhibitions, anniversaries, and community festivals. Through its boutique scale, intellectual rigor, and emphasis on place-based performance, Empressa Ensemble preserves and reimagines historical music as a living art form—one that fosters curiosity, reflection, and connection across time for contemporary Maryland audiences.
