Happenstance Theater

We are an ensemble of multi-talented performers who craft all aspects of our pieces from concept to realization. Under the Artistic co-Direction of Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell, we harvest imagery from the past and re-contextualize it in performances that address eternal themes of life, death, and the ephemeral. With the simplest means - movement, silence, theatrical clown, music, text, physical comedy and beauty - we seek to elevate the moment when the performers and audience meet, to lift the encounter beyond the daily and pedestrian into the realms of dreams, poetry, and art. Meaning is often discovered by happenstance.

About this Organization

The Washington City Paper says, “Happenstance Theater’s ensemble comedy is a gut-busting kind of funny.” The Washington Post describes our work as “visually striking and whimsical without being precious" and calls Happenstance Theater "DC’s leading peddler of whimsy.”  HAPPENSTANCE THEATER, founded in 2006, is a professional company committed to devising, producing and touring original, performer-created visual, poetic Theatre. Our ensemble has been developing work together since 2012. We have toured throughout the North Eastern US, and as far south as New Orleans, and as far West as Iowa, performing in a broad range of venues from 1200 seat state-of-the-art Theatres to outdoor street festivals, community centers to private parties and everything in between. In 2016 Happenstance received three Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Lead Actor. In 2017 Happenstance received two Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Musical Direction.

Services/Opportunities

Happenstance Theater is a delightfully precise group of actor/clowns, all hell bent on making you smile. It will be a smile that goes directly to your heart. If they're in your neighborhood, grab a friend or relative and hurry to buy a couple of tickets. You'll be sure to have a wonderful time.”  - Paul Binder, Founder, Big Apple Circus

PREPOSTEROUS! is a sophisticated, family-friendly, pocket-sized clown circus in which charming vintage clowns play circus animals, sing as a human calliope, do the classic circus mirror routine with a twist, invent a number of ridiculous "entrées", perform live music, and execute a very satisfying slow motion number involving a pie!

PREPOSTEROUS! premiered in the summer of 2017 at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s 50th Anniversary featuring CIRCUS ARTS and it has been performed at The National Theater as part of their Saturday Morning family series. The show is a pared down version of the award winning production IMPOSSIBLE! A Happenstance Circus about which the Washington Post said "Happenstance Theater specializes in the old skills - physical theater, clowning, mime - all served here with winking whimsy."

Featuring Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Gwen Grastorf, Sarah Olmsted Thomas and Alex Vernon.

VIDEO TRAILER

BrouHaHa is a comedic, existential escapade inspired by images of refugees fleeing on foot, Edwardian workers, cinematic treasures like Fellini’s La Strada and Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, and the dark comedy of Samuel Beckett. In this devised, clown-esque piece, Happenstance Theater's troupe of eccentrics walks the precipice at the end of the world. Their play lights up the darkness like a firecracker. This timely show appeals to audiences of any age.

"Happenstance’s troupe of Victorian clowns bring a sense of pathos and levity to the end of the world...the players’ well-honed use of improvisation, audience inclusion, and most notably, physical humor and superb live sound effects, enliven their remaining time on Earth." - Washington City Paper

Performance is 70 minutes with no intermission

The ensemble cast features Gwen Grastorf, Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Sarah Olmsted Thomas, and Alex Vernon.

BrouHaHa has been performed at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, Staunton Music Festival, Celebration Barn, NextNOW Festival at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Baltimore Theatre Project, NY Clown Theatre Festival in Brooklyn, Capital Fringe Festival, Reston CenterStage and St. Mary’s College. It was developed with a grant from the Morgan Fund and by support from the Share fund.

VIDEO TRAILER

An homage to the style and spirit of the Great Age of Vaudeville. Slapstick comedy, novelty acts, tight harmonies and celestial charades. Happenstance Theater brings Vaudeville back with moxie!

The ensemble cast features Gwen Grastorf, Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Sarah Olmsted Thomas, and Alex Vernon.

"If you’d like to, or need to be reminded of the pure and simple joy of life, PINOT  & AUGUSTINE will do the trick. Their show is pure entertainment, clean and fresh fun...The Most Adorable Show in the World!"  - DC Metro Theatre Arts

A sure-fire 45-minute, bilingual, crowd-pleaser, PINOT & AUGUSTINE is a classic, family-friendly clown duo inspired by the golden age of Circus.  Pinot is the authoritarian clown in fancy clothes and white cone hat. Augustine is the appealing red-nosed bumbler who punctures his pomposity.  Their show bubbles over with physical comedy, virtuosity and musical surprises from the sublime to the ridiculous: from lyrical melodies on a musical saw to pratfalls and a whoopee cushion.

PINOT & AUGUSTINE have appeared all over the world and are a hit with audiences of every age. The show is adaptable and is available for booking in Theatres, assembly programs, school performances, for street festivals, in cabarets, and PINOT & AUGUSTINE are also available as strolling entertainment for events.

“Wickedly funny...a Gorey illustration brought to life. It's a feather that will tickle your fancy.”   - Washington Post

“Cabaret Macabre gleams with the precision that has become Happenstance’s hallmark . . . gratifying . . . ”    - Washington City Paper

Inspired by the illustrations of Edward Gorey, Victorian nightmares, dangerous croquet, gothic romance, afternoon tea and perils of the deep, Cabaret Macabre features music played live with deadly flare and Happenstance Theater’s witty, visual theatrical collage. Cabaret Macabre was nominated for three Helen Hayes Awards in 2014 for Outstanding Costume Design, Resident Production (Sabrina Mandell), Outstanding Movement, Resident Play, and The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play or Musical.
