About this Organization
The Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery was established in 1988 to tell the story of the first free Black settlement in Montgomery County.
To truly understand the accomplishments of Sandy Spring, we must begin on the African continent, journey through the horrors of the Middle Passage, confront the realities of slavery and Jim Crow, and recognize the extraordinary contributions that Black people have made to the world, to the United States, and right here in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The Sandy Spring African American community is a blueprint for Black success. This story is not only history, it is an inheritance. Our ancestors built lives rooted in dignity, resilience, faith, and self-determination, creating institutions and traditions that have sustained generations.
Today, the Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery is led by descendants who honor this legacy and carry the sacred responsibility of ensuring that these stories continue to shape our understanding of the community’s past, inform our present, and inspire our future.
