Chad Buterbaugh

Chad is the State Folklorist at MSAC, where he directs all activities associated with the Maryland Traditions program, including: grantmaking in the Folklife Network, Folklife Apprenticeship, and Heritage Awards programs; developing and maintaining relationships with traditional artists and cultural workers across the state and on the national level; serving as a cultural advisor on traditional arts matters for constituents and colleagues; and aligning traditional arts efforts with MSAC's broader goals and priorities. Chad's objective in this work is to maintain a stable, transparent traditional arts infrastructure that serves all people in Maryland through funding, technical assistance, and clear, open channels of communication. He strives to use his privilege to the benefit of the public and frames the work of Maryland Traditions as a process of continual learning and strategic response. He has a PhD in folklore studies from Indiana University.
