Individual Artist

2013, 2016, 2019

I am an interdisciplinary artist whose uses sound, movement, and physical materials to explore how memories
embodied in objects, architecture, and landscapes have cultural resonance. These creative efforts interpret the effects of political power, technological shifts, and global economics on the human condition. Ultimately each piece explores how traces of the past continue to live with us in the present.

About the Artist

Carrie Fucile is an interdisciplinary artist and experimental musician whose work is frequently performative and collaborative. She is first and foremost a sound artist, but often incorporates movement and physical materials into her process. Her creative efforts interpret the effects of political power, technological shifts, and global economics on the human condition. Ultimately each piece explores traces of these events found in objects, architecture, and landscapes. Fucile has presented her work at venues that include The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD; Rhizome DC, Washington, DC; Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA; Casa Contemporânea, São Paulo, BR; and the Director's Lounge, Berlin, DE. Among other honors, she is a three-time recipient of the Maryland State Art Council’s Individual Artist Award. She has completed residencies and workshops at The World Is Sound in the Czech Republic, World of CO in Bulgaria, and D’CLINIC in Hungary. She lives and works in Baltimore, MD and is the MFA Studio Art Program Director at Towson University.

Artist's Statement

In recent years my work has becoming increasingly collaborative, as witnessed by my ongoing work with video artist Brenton Lim. Since 2022, we have created and performed two audiovisual pieces, entitled Dada Morte and X_X_I. We are currently at work on the final part of a trilogy, which is entitled The Comments. At their core, these performances are preoccupied with how twentieth and twenty-first century technology has shaped history, influenced our lives, and is enmeshed with surveillance and warfare.
