Elizabeth Sullivan

Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Visual / Media

My work is felt and experienced rather than described.

About the Artist

Elizabeth Sullivan, a painter and printmaker, grew up in Florida and holds a B.A. from Boston College.  Her art practice centers on non-objective painting in oil and mixed media.  Her work exhibits layers of thick, luminous oil paint interacting with thin, fragile drawing marks.  She has been a resident and active member of the arts community in Baltimore for many years, and her work has been shown at venues such as the Bromo Seltzer Tower, the World Trade Center, the Creative Alliance and the Maryland Federation of Art.  Sullivan's paintings and prints are held in various corporate and private art collections.

Artist's Statement

My work is a synthesis of memory, conversation and process.  The memory of a place, a scent, a certain time of day.  Studio conversations with other artists from prehistoric Cycladic sculptors to Titian to Joan Mitchell.  The process of thick, luminous oil paint interacting with thin, fragile drawing lines.  The work is an encounter for the viewer.  In the words of British artist and essayist Christopher Neve, "[They] have to be seen, at first hand, and felt, so that they give back their layers of meaning, which are experienced but may not be described."
