About the Artist

Maura Dwyer was born and raised in Baltimore and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. She creates work that supports place-making/keeping through teaching mural workshops, creating visual campaign material, and co-designing community art projects that fuse history, political action, and personal narrative.

Artist's Statement

In 2015, Maura co-founded and operated a mural studio called Spectrum Studio, that primarily worked with schools to create interactive, visual learning environments. After working in schools for three years and desiring a more collaborative approach with more funding opportunities for schools in lower-income neighborhoods, she auditioned to become a Young Audiences and MSAC roster Teaching Artist.  In more recent years, Maura has had the opportunity to work with organizers, planners, farmers, landscape architects, and community leaders to examine the role of public art in community development. In 2019, Maura expanded her public art practice by working on a capacity-building, green space project with the Neighborhood Design Center. Following that, she became a program coordinator for the Station North Arts District, while maintaining her artistic and Teaching Artist practice.  Recently, Maura has participated in Crankie Festivals, collaborative performances, political education campaigns, and Baltimore arts festivals like Light City and Artscape, and continues to work with communities on mural projects when possible! She aims to bring a community-based, co-design approach to any public art project.
