Photography, Visual / Media

I aim to capture our strongest travel memories through landscapes and street candids, using handheld and drone photography. They are both documentary and emotional, bringing the place to the viewer and immersing the viewer in the place.

About the Artist

Though based in Annapolis, Maryland, I travel for about 3 months per year and have been to over 50 countries; my photography is closely linked to my travels. I've had a lot of opportunities to exercise my interest by virtue of having lived in both the Netherlands and Hawaii, both exceptionally photogenic places. In my travels I try to capture a sense of place as well those evocative moments that form our strongest memories, from landscapes to candid street portraits. Travel photography of this sort has multiple goals: a documentary one and an emotional one. The former brings the place to the viewer; the latter brings the viewer to the place with a sense of immersion that extends beyond the visual.  For the past four years I have been very engaged in drone photography: those remarkable pieces of technology afford an entirely new photographic perspective, offering the sweep of a birds-eye view combined with the details of ground-level photography. I've been variously president and VP of the Digital Photography Club of Annapolis, serve on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) and am a member of the Annapolis Arts Alliance. My photos have won awards (the 2019 Washington Post travel photography contest and the Beacon Newspapers) and at any given moment I usually have something hanging in a few venues around the area, e.g., BWI airport and the Circle Gallery in downtown Annapolis. I usually appear in about a dozen shows a year around the area. I have had a solo gallery exhibit in 2021, a show of 29 of my drone images displayed for two months in the Martino Gallery at Maryland Hall. Another solo gallery, of volcano and storm pictures is scheduled for fall 2023 at the Chesapeake Arts Center in Baltimore. I lecture and teach regularly in the local area on a variety of photography topics: travel photography, street photography, and drone photography.
