Rockcreek’s Mission Statement since 1998

Our mission is to participate in the expansion of the steel pan (and since 2007 also the steel tongue drum) art form of Trinidad and Tobago through instrument construction, education and performance.

About the Artist

Kevin Martin, the founder of Rockcreek Steel Drums, has been building, teaching, and performing on steel pan musical instruments of Trinidad since 1989.  We have taught over 100,000 people in person the joy of performing music on the steel pan and the steel tongue drum. As a teaching artist, Kevin has visited over 300 schools bringing large group steel pan workshops and steel pan residencies throughout MD and the east coast. We have shipped thousands of instruments to almost every state in the US and over 30 countries over the past 30 years.  Kevin is an independent MSAC teaching artist, after working on the roster of Young Audiences for the past 10 years.  Learn more about Rockcreek Steel Drums at www.rockcreeksteeldrums.com      We would love to bring a workshop, performance, or residency to your school, retirement community, hospital, community group, home, or performance space.   Kevin was Young Audiences Artist of the Year in 2012, Has been awarded the Pathways school Community Partner of the year, and Rockcreek Steel Drums' mission is to participate in the expansion of the steel pan art form of Trinidad and the steel tongue drum art form.  Learn more at www.rockcreeksteeldrums.com

We have two types of programs available Fall 2021..... Our Artist In Residency Beginner Steel Pan visit and our one time workshop The Steel Drum Experience....... Below are the details of each

ROCKCREEK STEEL DRUMS BEGINNER STEEL PAN
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Our beginner steel pan Artist in Residence visit brings a complete beginner steel pan experience to your school or group. We teach all grades from 2nd grade to adult the basics of playing steel pan in a band preparing for a final concert. Rockcreek provides the instruments, and Kevin Martin transforms each group or class into a steel pan band. No musical experience is required for this program. Our Beginner Steel Pan Residency can last from one to five school days with one to four 45 minute workshops per group and a final concert.

Participating classes will learn to play chords and melodies, basic ear training, and the history of the steel pan of Trinidad and Tobago. This is a great opportunity for entire grades to have the experience of performing on a musical instrument in a band and to stand onstage performing for their peers and community.

HOW IT WORKS
We have made several flexible modifications to our Residency program to let us keep in line with changing health guidelines as we work through the Covid year(s). We can bring a program that reflects the current health guidelines at the time of the visit including: outdoor workshops or large room workshops, masking, 6 feet apart, no sharing of mallets or materials, one student per instrument, video final performances if necessary………… We will make whatever adjustments needed to keep the opportunity for students to perform instrumental music together.

The Kickoff Assembly……… The Birth of The Steel Pan of Trinidad and Tobago
Double Seconds.jpg
Dave G and Kevin.JPG
Assembly on playground with Aldin.jpg
The Residency visit starts off with this assembly, where students learn how the steel pan instrument was created, how it is built, and get to see a performance of songs on the steel pan.

We also have a virtual fieldtrip to our shacktory (where our instruments are built) that we can substitute if doing an assembly is not possible or if the school or group is in virtual learning when the residency is scheduled this year. .

Following the kickoff assembly each participating class or group will have one to five workshop rehearsals preparing for a final concert where each class performs a different song as a band in a group concert (or each class’s final performance can be recorded for a virtual final concert if needed).

Arts Integration and Residency Extensions

For full week residencies, Rockcreek offers Arts Integrated lessons to be included in the Residency including:

The Mathematics of building a steel pan

The Physics of steel drum tuning

The World History of the steel pan of Trinidad and Tobago

Building Bamboo shakers following a recipe/using ratios/using steps of production

Residency Costs

The cost of bringing our Beginner Steel Pan Artist In Residence Program to your school or group ranges from $1,200-$5,000 depending the number of classes, travel costs and number of days.

In The State of Maryland we are on The Maryland State Arts Council’s Teaching Artist Roster and their Arts In Education Grants for public schools and non-profits can be used to pay for 50% or more of the residency cost.

Here is a basic breakdown of the costs of each part of a Rockcreek Steel Drums Residency.

The Kickoff Assembly

The Kickoff Assembly is a 45 minute school assembly (can be outdoor or virtual if needed) called The Birth of The Steel Pan of Trinidad and Tobago where the Rockcreek Duo perform songs on steel pan and tell the story of the birth of the steel pan of Trinidad in the 1940’s. Students will learn about how the early steel pans were invented and how they are built. The assembly will prepare the students for their residency workshops where they will learn to perform on the steel pan.

Single 45 minute assembly $750 Back to Back 45 Minute Assemblies $1,100

Workshops

Residencies can happen in a day or can last up to a week. Each class will have between one and five 45 minute workshops with Kevin Martin where they will learn to perform in a steel band.

Each 45 minute class workshop $125

Orientation/Planning Meeting and Evaluation/Wrapup meeting

The cost of the residency planning, orientation and post meetings is a flat fee of $200

We will have a phone/video meeting before the residency with participating teachers to plan and schedule the residency visit assembly, workshops and performance.

During the planning meeting we can also work with the teachers to choose some of our arts integrated aspects of focus for the residency visit. At the end of the residency there is a final short evaluation meeting/survey to see what worked well and to learn how to make a future visit even better.

Steel Pan Instrument Tuning/Maintenance

Rockcreek Steel Drums will bring enough instruments for each student in each class to perform on a steel pan for the workshops and performances. The Tuning/Maintenance cost includes a day of tuning the instruments before and after each residency, load in, load out.

Residency Tuning/Maintenance/load in/out/setup and all residency supplies $100/per residency day

Final Rehearsal and Final Concert (can be a video done one class at a time if needed)

Each class will have a final rehearsal and final concert. The way we do the final rehearsal will depend on the health restrictions at the time of the residency. The final concert can be with all classes together and an audience, or it can be an outdoors concert, or it can be recorded one class at a time and presented virtually.

The cost of the Final Rehearsal and Final Concert is $250

Travel

The travel cost of a residency depends on the number of miles and number of trips ….. and for longer distances shipping and plane travel. We do everything we can to keep the travel cost as low as possible.

In Maryland the travel cost is a flat $100/day and includes instrument transport.
