About the Artist

Schaun Champion is a multidisciplinary visual artist, director of photography and instructor. Using both digital and analog visual tools, Schaun explores the histories and myths humans tell themselves through portraiture, fine art and cultural documentary/archival works—creating intentionally cinematic and honest imagery influenced by the threads of classic films, music, themes of nature, and nostalgia while illustrating the drama within the familiar. Schaun’s work is in both public and private collections in several countries. She has exhibited her work internationally through museums, galleries and institutions such as the National Aquarium,  NARS Foundation, Barnes Foundation, James E. Lewis Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Antipode Gallery of Marseille, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (Germany Architecture Museum), Eubie Blake Cultural Center, TENT Rotterdam, Notre Dame of Maryland, Washington Project for the Arts and Latela Curatorial.

Artist's Statement

In her art practice, Champion explores the interconnectedness of humans to their environments, memories, phenomena and color through visual storytelling. Using vignettes of quiet moments that ask for deeper thought around the ‘re-memory’ of personal and communal histories. Champion draws from our infectious competition to capture the human “stories” developed to cope with our understanding of the world around us. Acknowledging that living subjects aren’t always human but have been touched by their presence and asking “What does it mean to be IN nature?”. She seeks to understand how humans with no access to previous mythology or ideology might make sense of their situation or “home”.
