SHARON LEE MINOR

Literary, Multidisciplinary, Multidisciplinary Art, Multimedia, Performance, Performance Art, Prose, Visual / Media

I make things. I began under the tutelage of my great-grandmother and my grandmother, both Hatties. That is where I first became enamored with cloths, and sewing. I learned to be patient with materials, and with people. Since then, I've created mixed media expressions of what it means to be Human.

About the Artist

Sharon is a Visual/Performance Artist, Aesthetic Anthropologist, Ordained Minister, and Arts Educator/Curator. She has presented lecture-demonstrations, performances, and visual arts exhibitions at numerous colleges, universities, galleries, churches, community centers, and international conferences. Sharon synthesizes art and anthropology into her visual and performance artwork as a painter, choreographer, filmmaker, music composer, and an online community organizer. Her fieldwork research has been to unearth primary artifacts and documents within museums throughout North America, the African Diaspora, and the Continent of Africa. Sharon (aka Sharon Lee Minor King, PhD.) focuses her research on Ageism and the creative processes/practices of ancient African and Asian artists and healers that counter prejudices towards Aging by encouraging participants by restoring memories and storytelling through the Arts. She produces virtual activities, including museum-quality virtual exhibitions that celebrate the interconnectivity within the Arts as they relate to the Aging Process, beginning in early childhood to senior Elderhood (“From the Womb to the Tomb”). Sharon enjoys creating different personas for her multi-talents. As “Auntie Afrika” she has produced two CDs, and as “Techno-Granny”, she creates video documentaries of artists, and storytelling videos for all ages including, “The Statue That Walked the Water”, commemorating the history of the Sandy Spring Slave Museum’s logo, located in Maryland. For her contributions to the arts and humanities in Montgomery County, Md. and the African Diaspora, Sharon Lee Minor King, (aka Auntie Afrika) received a Special Recognition by the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and the Sandy Spring Slavery Museum. She is a member of the Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Engravers Society, Montgomery Arts Association, Olney Arts Association, Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations, African American Womens Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  For more information go to: www.octaghanahouse2025.com

Artist's Statement

I find it valuable to counterbalance the pragmatic drawing that is traditionally taught in western art schools, with traditional techniques taught in Asia, particularly China and Japan, that are influenced by ancient symbols and practices found within Africa. Symbolism is very important throughout my artwork; especially ancient and traditional ones found within African and Native American cultures. I am also intrigued with what current technology can and cannot do. What some consider “creating content”, I explore the time-honored multiple dimensions that are contained within the disciplines via the arts, sciences, and spirit. Today as a visual and performance artist I focus more on how my mastering of creative skills can be techno-assisted without a sense of my being dominated or oppressed. My work explores the audacious possibilities of AI via video and sound while simultaneously keeps me humbled by what remains my priorities via pulverizing stone into paint and meditating with an inkstone on paper and canvas.
