I make things. I began under the tutelage of my great-grandmother and my grandmother, both Hatties. That is where I first became enamored with cloths, and sewing. I learned to be patient with materials, and with people. Since then, I've created mixed media expressions of what it means to be Human.
About the Artist
Sharon is a Visual/Performance Artist, Aesthetic Anthropologist, Ordained Minister, and Arts Educator/Curator. She has presented lecture-demonstrations, performances, and visual arts exhibitions at numerous colleges, universities, galleries, churches, community centers, and international conferences. Sharon synthesizes art and anthropology into her visual and performance artwork as a painter, choreographer, filmmaker, music composer, and an online community organizer. Her fieldwork research has been to unearth primary artifacts and documents within museums throughout North America, the African Diaspora, and the Continent of Africa. Sharon (aka Sharon Lee Minor King, PhD.) focuses her research on Ageism and the creative processes/practices of ancient African and Asian artists and healers that counter prejudices towards Aging by encouraging participants by restoring memories and storytelling through the Arts. She produces virtual activities, including museum-quality virtual exhibitions that celebrate the interconnectivity within the Arts as they relate to the Aging Process, beginning in early childhood to senior Elderhood (“From the Womb to the Tomb”). Sharon enjoys creating different personas for her multi-talents. As “Auntie Afrika” she has produced two CDs, and as “Techno-Granny”, she creates video documentaries of artists, and storytelling videos for all ages including, “The Statue That Walked the Water”, commemorating the history of the Sandy Spring Slave Museum’s logo, located in Maryland. For her contributions to the arts and humanities in Montgomery County, Md. and the African Diaspora, Sharon Lee Minor King, (aka Auntie Afrika) received a Special Recognition by the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and the Sandy Spring Slavery Museum. She is a member of the Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Engravers Society, Montgomery Arts Association, Olney Arts Association, Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations, African American Womens Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Artist's Statement
I find it valuable to counterbalance the pragmatic drawing that is traditionally taught in western art schools, with traditional techniques taught in Asia, particularly China and Japan, that are influenced by ancient symbols and practices found within Africa. Symbolism is very important throughout my artwork; especially ancient and traditional ones found within African and Native American cultures. I am also intrigued with what current technology can and cannot do. What some consider “creating content”, I explore the time-honored multiple dimensions that are contained within the disciplines via the arts, sciences, and spirit. Today as a visual and performance artist I focus more on how my mastering of creative skills can be techno-assisted without a sense of my being dominated or oppressed. My work explores the audacious possibilities of AI via video and sound while simultaneously keeps me humbled by what remains my priorities via pulverizing stone into paint and meditating with an inkstone on paper and canvas.Featured Work

THE STATUE THAT WALKED THE WATER
See more information about THE STATUE THAT WALKED THE WATERThis is TRUE STORY...a children-friendly imaginative version of a true story about a statue at the Sandy Spring Slave Museum (SSSM) that became its symbolic logo. . Miraculously, the statue had been seen in Ghana, West Africa, 1995 at different times by both the storyteller (Sharon Lee Minor), and Dr. Winston A. Anderson, Founder of SSSM, . But they did not know each other, and just by coincidence this authentic history would become an intriguing "bridge-builder" between two nations and multiple cultures.
This project is based on research done by Artist/Scholar Sharon Lee Minor King, Ph.D. and funded by the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland.Medium: VIDEOYear: 2020Details: 3 MINUTES -

GRATEFUL: A CHAT WITH MARGIE B 11 2 23
See more information about GRATEFUL: A CHAT WITH MARGIE B 11 2 23The following video documents the online interview and debut of digital artwork done by Marjorie Billingsley entitled, "Only GOD: A Chat With Margie B". This special event was held on November 2, 2023 as a joint effort sponsored by two monthly groups that gather folks from around the world:
*A DEEPER STUDY OF THE SACRED: Creatives Study Creativity (1st Thursdays every month)
*THE DRAWING CLINIC (3rd Thursdays every month)
Margie’s extraordinary use of color and explanations of her work is an inspiration for all generations, and for all who desire to overcome any challenges. In spite of her limitations due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), she has taken her limitations onto another level of Perseverance, Practice, and shows a willingness to learn beyond any physical obstacles. With the use of one finger, she has created over 100 works of digital art since May 2023 that are worthy of all sorts of future acclaims and possibilities. She says, “And, I am just beginning!”
What started out as a casual conversation between two friends, Margie and and Sharon Lee Minor (aka Auntie Afrika), became a mutually-creative challenge, and a series of instructional online classes in the DRAWING CLINIC and private sessions. Margie’s descriptions of her creative process within the documentary also reveal the deep respect and mutual admiration between these two who have known each other since childhood.
The video also provides a glimpse into what has made Margie so tenacious. Growing up in Eastland Gardens, a stable African American community in Washington, D.C. was also a blessing. She, along with others including Sharon, grew up knowing their worth as global citizens, to be competent and confident, and to set examples of accomplishment and excellence wherever they went. Their community would not tolerate anything less!
This video will inspire all generations wherever they may be around the world. Margie’s strong faith, beliefs, and submission to something beyond herself will cause anyone with a heart to consider how the Arts can restore physical, mental, and spiritual well-being for the ones who create, as well as for those who are willing to support…and even try their own hand at making something CREATIVE!
GRATEFUL, the video, is the property of A MINOR ENTERPRISE for the use of documentation and research only. No monetary gain has been accrued, and it is protected by international and U.S. Copyright laws. However, all of the original artwork included remains the sole property of the creative artists of origin. For use of this video, contact in writing A MINOR ENTERPRISE. See more information about MY REALITY AS A MAKER
This track is from my CD "Auntie Afrika . It is also the soundtrack for my video, "Heritage Boxes My Reality" (https://youtu.be/ySher9Kgoc8). The video shows examples of my Heritage Boxes, and students from college level classes. Heritage.
Originally, the lyrics were a part of my dissertation for the first doctoral degree given by The Ohio State University that combined Art and Anthropology (Art Education). The CD was published in 2011. I self-taught the use of the GarageBand software and created all the music and voices digitally. The photo depicts my showing elementary level art students how I did it. After class they returned and wanted to know more details.
