MSAC relies on a diverse array of experts from across the state of Maryland to do the important work of evaluating applications. We invite participation through program-specific public calls for panelists. We select panelists with a focus on diversity of experiences, diversity of location, and expertise in varying artistic disciplines. Panelists must be Maryland residents.

Arts in Education Grant Panelists

By reviewing and scoring grant applications, Arts in Education Grant panelists help teaching artists connect to small organizations across Maryland to make an impact on a variety of learning communities. Applications include proposals for project-based work led by a teaching artist with schools, non-profits, and other government entities.

Selected Arts in Education Grant panelists serve an annual term, reviewing applications every month between August - May (10 months out of the year).

What to Expect as a Panelist

  • Application reviews are completed on a panelist’s own time online during the middle of each month, beginning in August 2022.
  • Panelists typically review 10-20 applications per month, which requires approximately 2-4 hours to complete over a week period (total varies from month to month).
  • A total of 5 panelists are needed to serve for one year (August 2022 - May 2023). 
  • A required panelist orientation will take place online in July 2022 (Date TBD).
  • Panelists receive compensation of $50 for the training, along with $200 per monthly review. 
  • Panelists must have access to a computer with internet connection to complete reviews.

What We’re Looking For

  • Independent artists, arts administrators, teachers, arts educators, teaching artists, arts education enthusiasts, and students interested in serving Maryland's arts sector while gaining experience and insight in the grant review process.

Arts in Education Teaching Artist Roster Panelists

Panelists evaluate applications for the MSAC Teaching Artist Roster, an important component of MSAC’s Arts in Education program. The Teaching Artist Roster recognizes that teaching artists are integral to the arts education ecosystem, providing supplementary arts education experiences that deepen learning. It supports Maryland teaching artists and the elevation of their careers. Inclusion on the roster allows teaching artists to apply for grants to support arts education engagements at schools and community sites.

Selected Arts in Education Teaching Artist Roster panelists serve an annual term, reviewing applications quarterly in September, December, February, and June (four times a year).  

What to Expect as a Panelist

  • Application reviews are completed on a panelist’s own time online during the middle of each month, beginning in September 2022.
  • Panelists typically review 10-20 applications per quarter, which requires approximately 4-6 hours to complete over a two-week period (total varies from month to month).
  • Attend a quarterly virtual panel meeting to collaboratively evaluate applications with other panelists.
  • A total of 5 panelists are needed to serve for one year (September 2022 - June 2023). 
  • A required panelist orientation will take place online in August 2022 (Date TBD).
  • Panelists receive compensation of $50 for the training, along with $200 per quarterly review. 
  • Panelists must have access to a computer with internet connection to complete reviews.

How do I apply to be a panelist? 

Submit your application via MSAC’s online grants management system, SmartSimple. 

  • Click here to log in or create a free account in SmartSimple.
  • Under Funding Opportunities, select "Public Call."
  • Select "Panelist" from the drop-down options and click "Save Draft" to populate the application.
  • Select “Arts in Education Grant” or “Arts in Education Teaching Artist Roster” as the Grant Program.
