Maryland State Arts Council Searching for Artists to Participate in “New Day Campaign,” Focusing on Art that Conveys Behavioral Health Matters and Healing

Baltimore, MD (August 29, 2018) – Since June, the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) has adorned its office with artwork by 17 Maryland artists whose work in some way depicts the hardships they face with behavioral health matters. The exhibit, entitled “Dusk & Dawn” is part of the New Day Campaign (http://newdaycampaign.org), an initiative dedicated to using arts programming and public engagement to challenge stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and substance use.

"The Maryland State Arts Council has been thrilled to host the New Day Campaign “Dusk & Dawn” exhibit (http://newdaycampaign.org/seasons/2018/) in our office space and support the organization's effort to facilitate artist participation and bring healing through the arts to a statewide audience," stated Steven Skerritt-Davis, program director, Community Arts Development.

The Campaign is looking for artists of all disciplines to participate in a new statewide initiative, the “Dusk & Dawn” series.

“There are so many of us - artists, performers, and writers - throughout the state who are affected by mental illness and substance use disorder - either ourselves or loved ones in our lives,” stated Peter Bruun, founder and director, New Day Campaign.  “Our September 12 event provides an opportunity to come together as a creative community with a collective voice, seeking connection over isolation. I look forward to sharing the opportunities on how to become involved with the New Day Campaign programming coming up across the state, helping to build a new day where those with mental illness or addiction are met with compassion and understanding rather than fear and judgment.”

About New Day Campaign

In partnership with numerous public and private art and behavioral health agencies, the New Day Campaign brings arts programming and public engagement to challenge stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and substance use, making the world a more healing place. Bringing people together through art, performance, and words, we share our stories, connect with one another, and learn of the many resources available to us—we together build a new day, where those with addiction and mental illness are met with compassion and understanding rather than fear and judgment.
