What do a disco-dancing dragonfly, a comb jelly with a combover and a spinning owl have in common? They all live in the Chesapeake Bay and star in this lively video created by 101 fifth graders during a week-long residency at Clarksville Elementary School in Clarksville, Maryland. The students learned how to create an animated cycle with the zoetrope, a 19th-century optical toy, and then filmed their drawings frame by frame. Each student brought to life a plant or animal of the Chesapeake Bay. The authentic animal sounds were provided by the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and by Gary Nafis. The music is by songwriter, singer, and musician Frank Schwartz and Tom Wisner, the late environmental educator and songwriter known as the “Bard of the Chesapeake.” "Take a Peek at the Chesapeake" was an official selection of the 2015 Chesapeake Film Festival.
