Fleurette Africaine

Classical guitarist Candice Mowbray, with her husband Danny Webber on steel-string guitar, transcribed “Fleurette Africaine,” or “African Flower,” from a video of Ellington playing the piece solo on piano on The Tonight Show, hosted by Art Linkletter, September 19, 1962. Two days earlier, Ellington had recorded “Fleurette Africaine” with bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach for their album Money Jungle. Filmmaker Darroch Greer thought the moody tones could illustrate the remarkable life of Eugene Bullard and his time in the City of Light. Much of the footage was shot in France for Greer’s and Paul Glenshaw’s documentary The Lafayette Escadrille. Special thanks to Harry Miller, ASC, for color correction of the French footage.

Composed by Duke Ellington
Performed by Candice Mowbray and Danny Webber
