From a young age, it was clear Roberta's first love was art. At the age of 9 years old, her mom signed me up for after-school art classes. When she was 10, she entered a tv guide ad contest and was chosen for art classes but was unable to take them because she was too young to enroll in their school.
As Roberta continued to hone her craft, Roberta became interested in experimenting with different mediums and techniques. As she entered her teenage years, she would get hired to draw murals on kids' bedroom walls. In high school, some of her drawings were in the school exhibit.
Monica Milton's love of art began when she was a child as she loved to draw cartoons and people.
Paula Brown is an accomplished dancer, professor and certified ballet instructor and studio owner. She has held several partnerships and artist and residency with the John F. Kennedy Center and Creative Suitland in Prince Georges County Maryland. As a first-time author, Ms. Brown is hopeful to share her experience and break any stigma of Black and brown girls in the classical ballet community.
The scope of my artwork includes collage, mixed media, artist-made books, drawing, photography, and printmaking. I share a studio with my partner, Denise, at Wamalingo Studio in Brentwood, MD. I have exhibited in many local exhibitions through the years and my work has been collected in public and private collections.
If there is any common thread throughout my work it would best describe as embracing the elements of chance, accident, improvisation as well as natural abstraction. At times, it also involves my personal attack on rationality and a materialistic and disposable world.
