Every painting begins with an idea. Sometimes that idea is inspired by the light, or a color scheme, a mood, a rhythm of dappled light or the patterns of light and dark. My best paintings come when I see something so amazing to me in nature and I just have to stop and paint it. Because of my long career as a graphic designer, strong concepts and design are key factors for me to a successful painting. That and my life long professional motto: keep it simple.
About the Artist
A native of Maryland, Carol has lived in the Metropolitan DC area and now lives in Annapolis. Carol began her career as an accomplished art director/ graphic designer working at national advertising agencies. She started her own design business of 18 years and her primary client was National Geographic. Her design background has given her a solid foundation of the value of strong concepts, composition, and color in her approach to painting. “Painting in oil has become my passion. I have always been awestruck by nature’s beauty which is why I love to paint from life or Plein Air. Whether I am outdoors or in my studio, my painting always starts with an idea. Sometimes it is the light, or a play of patterns and rhythms of shadows, magnificent skies, or simply bold color. I always compose my concept in a small sketch I am excited about and stick to my idea. I believe a good design is the bones of a good painting. I stick to my lifelong professional motto: keep it simple. Carol enjoys Plein Air Competitions and has participated in PaintAnnapolis, Frederick, Easton, Cambridge, Chestertown and Harford County. Carol is an Associate Artist at Gallery 322 in Frederick MD. She has exhibited in galleries throughout Maryland at Lowe House Gallery, Maryland Federation of Art, Benfield Gallery, Crystal Moll Gallery, A.M. Gravely Gallery, River Gallery Galesville, The Galleries at Quiet Waters Park, and River Gallery Chestertown. Carol is a member of Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, Maryland Federation of Art, and Working Artist Forum and Washington Society of Landscape Painters.Artist's Statement
