His study of singing has centered on old-time and bluegrass styles, focusing on harmony duets in the southern Appalachian tradition. His study of guitar ranges across a variety of styles, but especially flat-picking bluegrass guitar. More recently he has begun to study jazz guitar. His mandolin work focuses on the traditional mandolin style of Bill Monroe, the founder of Bluegrass music. Kagey’s other roles in the band include being the principal songwriter. He has penned over 60 songs and maintains a daily practice and study of the craft. He has a background in creative writing, which was his focus while earning a BA in English from H-SC. In addition, Kagey manages live-sound production for the band by maintaining equipment and working with in-house sound engineers at venues and festivals.
