Drawing, Painting, Sculpture / Installation, Visual / Media

I paint in acrylic and collaged paper on canvas to create objects of beauty, the harmonies of color and pattern are a lure, which on closer examination focus the viewer on the issues of biodiversity loss and climate change.

Fallen leaves and animals cut from newspapers and maps create visual poems connecting human actions with the timeless procession of the seasons; the passage of time and the constancy of change. I edit and juxtapose the words into new messages. Headlines of loss and hope swirl. The elements of water and stone are central in many. The stones, solid and eternal, have been sculpted by water and time. The water, formless and yielding, a substance in motion which buoys up, moves objects with it, transforms earth and stone. When involving the sky I focus on the fleeting quality of dusk and dawn, moments of transition/transformation.

My installations are autobiographical and consist of discarded plastics; mostly my own and my neighbors’ discards. The work is immersive and is monochromatic to convey a feeling and perspective on the plastics. We seldom think of these varied and useful things as the same, but reduced to one color, it is all the same toxic petroleum-based material.

About the Artist

My work focuses on my concern with the damage humans are doing to the planet and where our culture is heading.  I do acrylic paintings with collaged newspaper and maps on. I am doing a series of installations relating to plastic waste.  The first was a 9x13 foot room at Artomatic DC, 2024, inspired by an installation I did in a Washington Project for the Arts show years ago.  The second site specific installation was at the Crows Nest gallery in Baltimore MD, in 2025. I have exhibited artwork in numerous DC area galleries including Touchstone, the Foundry, Strathmore Arts, Maryland Federation of Art, Addison-Ripley, the Katzen Arts Center, Washington Project for the Arts and the Washington Women’s Arts Center.   My academic background is a BFA in Printmaking and a BS in Biology and I have been illustrating science since 1983.  My focus on science communication is a manifestation of my serious concern about the state of our planet's ecosystem, but my paintings and installation work are a more personal expression. I live and work in Darnestown, MD.
