About the Artist

Megan Jean Klay is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges the traditions of American roots music with the energy and independence of modern rock. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has built a national reputation as a powerful vocalist, prolific songwriter, and commanding live performer, with a body of work defined by emotional intensity, stylistic range, and an unwavering commitment to independent artistry. Megan Jean Klay began her career in New York City’s East Village while studying theater at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where she developed her performance foundation in both music and stagecraft. During this formative period, she held a residency at CBGB’s and CBGB’s Acoustic Gallery and performed at iconic downtown venues including The Knitting Factory and Pianos. This early immersion in New York’s independent music scene helped shape her genre-fluid approach and lifelong DIY ethos. She is best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, and principal songwriter of Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band(later abbreviated as KFB), an independent touring act that released multiple self-produced albums and performed more than 2,000 shows nationwide. The band developed a reputation for high-energy live performances and a distinctive blend of rock, folk, blues, and old-time influences, building a grassroots following through relentless touring and self-managed distribution. As a vocalist, Megan Jean has also contributed to nationally recognized recordings, most notably as a featured singer on “Barnburnin’” by United Nations Cultural Ambassador Gangstagrass, which reached #5 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart. Her work has been featured across national media platforms, including appearances on NPR’s Mountain Stage, PBS’s Music Voyager and Heartland Network’s More Than the Music, further establishing her as a respected voice within contemporary American roots music. In collaboration with multi-instrumentalist husband Byrne Klay, she performs as Megan Jean & Byrne Klay, an acoustic duo known for its powerful vocal harmonies, dynamic instrumentation, and emotionally direct performances. The duo has appeared on prominent venues including the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and has shared the stage with a wide range of nationally touring artists, including Shovels & Rope, Amythyst Kiah, Randall Bramblett, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and 10,000 Maniacs. In 2021, Megan Jean co-founded Megan Jean’s Secret Family, a genre-bending ensemble built around her songwriting and vocal presence. Blending 1970s rock influences with the edge of 1990s alternative music, the band creates original material that is both danceable and deeply rooted in American musical traditions. Their debut full-length album, PLOT (Play Loud On Turntable), was released in October 2024 with support from a Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grant. The band made its national radio debut on Mountain Stage alongside artists including Keller Williams and Bettye LaVette, and has shared stages with Fastball, Spin Doctors, Joan Osborne, Cabinet, Jason Carter, and Cris Jacobs. The group is currently completing its sophomore album, Contender, at Riot City Studios, with a full release planned for 2027. Alongside her collaborative projects, Megan Jean continues to expand her artistic voice through solo work. Her debut solo album, Death Is an Old Friend, is scheduled for release in fall 2026 and represents a distilled expression of her songwriting, exploring themes of mortality, resilience, and human connection with stark honesty and lyrical depth. Across all formats—solo, duo, and full band—Megan Jean Klay’s work is unified by a commitment to authenticity, storytelling, and the transformative power of live performance. Her career reflects both artistic independence and sustained professional achievement, positioning her as a significant contributor to Maryland’s contemporary music landscape and the broader American roots tradition.
